How to measure your dog for a harness

Harness sizes vary by brand, so measuring your dog is the best way to choose.

Chest girth

Wrap a soft tape around the widest part of the rib cage, just behind the front legs. This is the most important measurement.

Neck

Measure around the base of the neck where a collar sits.

Weight

Many size charts also list weight ranges. Use weight as a check, not the main guide.

Fit check

You should be able to slide two fingers under the straps. The harness should not rub behind the front legs or slide over the shoulders.

Front clip or back clip

Front-clip harnesses can help reduce pulling. Back-clip harnesses are simple and comfortable for dogs that already walk well.

Check regularly

Puppies grow fast, and adult dogs change weight. Recheck the fit every few weeks for growing dogs.
